Contradicting Trump, Fauci Doesn’t ‘See Us Eradicating’ Covid-19 – Forbes

Infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday he believes the world will get control of Covid-19, but I dont really see us eradicating it, expressing a view in line with public health expertsbut directly contradicting President Donald Trumps claims made as recently as Tuesday that the virus will disappear.

Fauci said in a virtual interview hosted by the TB Alliance that while it may not be possible for Covid-19 to go away entirely, as SARS did, it will be possible to bring it down to such a low level that we will not be in the position that we’re in right now for an extended period of time.
Fauci pointed to a combination of good public health measures, a degree of global herd immunity and a good vaccine as essential to bringing the virus down, and noted that he does feel cautiously optimistic that we will get an effective vaccine.
I think when we put all three of those together, we will get control of this, whether its this year or next year, Fauci said.
The comments directly contrast with Trump, who repeated his claim at a press conference Tuesday that Covid-19 will disappear.
The suggestion that the virus wont be totally eradicated echoes other global public health experts; World Health Organization emergencies director Dr. Mike Ryan warned in May that much like HIV, the virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away.
Wellcome Trust director Prof. Sir Jeremy Farrar, similarly, told the United Kingdoms House of Commons Tuesday that even with a vaccine and effective treatments, humanity will still be living with this virus for…decades to come.
Big Number
57,777: The number of new Covid-19 cases recorded in the U.S. on July 21, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Key Background
Faucis contradiction of Trump comes as the White House has recently sought to undermine and sideline the infectious disease expert, who has repeatedly issued stronger warnings and statements about the pandemic than the president and his allies. The White House sparked an outcry earlier in July by providing news outlets with allegedly false statements Fauci made about the pandemic in an apparent attempt to discredit him, which CNN described as resembl[ing] opposition research on a political opponent, and White House trade advisor Peter Navarro described Fauci as wrong about everything in a recent op-ed. Fauci also said he was not invited to appear with Trump at the Tuesday press conference, despite typically speaking at the presidents coronavirus press briefings in the past. The public health expertwho remains far more trusted by the American public on the pandemic than Trumphas denounced the White House attacks against him as counterproductive, calling the attempts to discredit him bizarre and completely wrong in a recent interview with the Atlantic.
